About the Library

Mission

The Luzerne County Community College Library supports the objectives of the college by providing resources and services to meet the information needs of LCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni, as well as the residents of Luzerne County.

Facilities

The library is located on the LCCC main campus in Building 6. There are over sixty seats available for quiet study. The SirsiDynix online catalog indicates if the library owns a particular book or other library material and its location. Library users have access to the many computers in the library: some are reserved for only research while others have both research capabilities and Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. A photocopier and three microform-reader printers are available for use at a charge of $.10 per copy. Library users may use audiovisual materials in Room 601. Two group study rooms are available for students either with a reservation or on a first come, first serve basis. The LCCC Library is accessible to people with disabilities.

Resources

The library collections are on open shelves to which library users have direct access. The library’s collections contain over 60,000 book volumes, arranged according to the Library of Congress classification system; approximately 200 print periodical subscriptions, arranged alphabetically according to title; over 3,300 audiovisual items; and over 11,000 items on microform. The library subscribes to over thirty research databases including Academic Search Elite, Biographies Plus, Business Source Elite, Encyclopedia Britannica Online, ERIC, JSTOR, Lexis-Nexis Academic, Literature Online, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, Nursing & Allied Health Source, and ScienceDirect. The library research databases can be accessed off-campus by LCCC students, faculty, and staff with a valid college email account. For complete information about accessing the library’s databases, consult the LCCC Library’s website at the following address: http://depts.luzerne.edu/library/.

Services

During all library hours, professional librarians provide assistance at the Reference Desk. The librarians will help students become information literate, which includes learning how to find, evaluate, and use information. The professional librarians provide individualized assistance in the use of reference sources, research databases, the Internet, and the library online catalog. Typically, students in the First Year Experience courses will receive a basic introduction to the library and to information literacy skills. Faculty schedule Information Literacy classes at the library for other courses as well. Students may borrow books or obtain copies of articles via the library’s Inter-Library Loan service when the requested items are not owned by the library—although it takes up to two weeks to receive materials from other libraries. College students have access to eReference services including Ask Here PA, a 24-hour/7-day-a-week service, and the Ask A Librarian service, which is specific to the LCCC Library. For more information on the services available at the library, call the Reference Desk at 570-740-0661.

The Circulation Desk staff members provide directional information, issue library cards, check out and check in library materials, and maintain the course reserve collection. Books may be borrowed for two weeks. Contact the staff at the Circulation Desk for more information at 570-740-0415.
