LC Classification

The LCCC library uses the Library of Congress classification system to organize the items in the collection. This system is similar to the Dewey Decimal system found in most public libraries and K-12 schools, except that it arranges items by subject using the alphabet instead of numbers. The subjects start from A and end up at Z, but they are not usually organized alphabetically. For example, social sciences texts are located in the H section.

Within each broader section, the categories go from general to specific. Thus, the call number of a general social sciences text will start with H, while the call number of an book about "Communities. Classes. Races." will begin with HT. The numbers that follow the main letters are generated using rules pertaining to other aspects of the book such as author, title, and year of publication. Once used to the system, the classification scheme makes sense and items desired can easily be found.
